How to Play

Play Tonality game online for free. Tonality is a sound-based listening memory game with 3 game modes where players must match 2 blocks with the same tone on practice, timed, or active mode. This game is rendered in mobile-friendly HTML5, so it offers cross-device gameplay. You can play it on mobile devices like Apple iPhones, Google Android powered cell phones from manufactures like Samsung, tablets like the iPad or Kindle Fire, laptops, and Windows-powered desktop computers. All game files are stored locally in your web browser cache. This game works in Apple Safari, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Opera and other modern web browsers.

Starting the Game

Once the game screen loads, you will see three game mode options: Practice, Timed, and Active.
Choose your preferred game mode. Once you select a mode, it will take you to the Select Board Size screen.
There are four available board size options. That’s 3 x 3, 4 x 4, 5 x 5, and 6 x 6. Select one.
- 3 x 3 board – has 8 blocks
- 4 x 4 board – has 16 blocks
- 5 x 5 board – has 24 blocks
- 6 x 6 board – has 36 blocks
- Once you click or tap a board option, the game will immediately start.
- If you choose a timed game, be ready. The timer starts right away.
- Game Mode Options
  - Practice – Ideal for beginners. Train your ear to listen to different tones.
    - This mode allows you to take your time finding the right block to match with another block of the same tone.
    - Timed – The timed mode is for seasoned players with more sensitive earns. You must finish matching all the blocks with the time limit.
      - Time limits vary depending on the size of the board:
      - 3 x 3 board – 11 seconds
      - 4 x 4 – 16 seconds
      - 5 x 5 – 21 seconds
      - 6 x 6 – 26 seconds
      - Active – This does not have a time limit but it’s a trickier mode. When you’ve previously selected 2 blocks but have not matched them, these two blocks can switch places.
        2 blocks can switch anytime randomly. This can mess with your memory, which makes the puzzle harder to solve.
        Game Controls
        Touchscreen
        For better gaming experience, be sure to rotate your device horizontally.
        To select a block, simply tap a dark block using your finger. You can only tap one block at a time.
        Once you tap a block, it will turn light gray. Then tap another block to listen to its tone.
        If the next block you select matches the tone of your previous block, both blocks with disappear.
        However, if the next block you select does not match your previous block, both blocks will return to it’s dark gray color.
        Keep tapping and listening to blocks to match their tone. Try to minimize the number of times you open the same blocks to reduce the number of misses.
        The game ends once you’ve matched all the blocks or when you run out of time.
        Mouse
        Using your mouse cursor, left click on a block. You can only click on a block one at a time.
        Once you click a block, it will turn light gray. Then click any block to listen to its tone.
        If the next block you click matches the tone of your previous block, both blocks with disappear.
        However, if the next block your select does not match your previous block, both blocks will return to its dark gray color.
        Keep clicking and listening to blocks to match their tone. If you can, try to minimize the number of times you click the same block to reduce the number of misses.
        The game comes to an end once you run out of time or when you’ve matched all the blocks.
        After-Game Screen
        Once you solve the puzzle, the after-game screen displays “Victory!”
        But if you run out of time under Time mode, the screen displays “Out of Time.”
        The after-game screen shows your game mode, the size of the board you played, and the time it took to solve the puzzle.
        It also displays the number of misses you committed as well as any lucky hits you made.
        To go back to the opening main menu, simply select the X button at the bottom right of the screen.
        Strategy
        This unique virtual hearing game will test your listening and memory skills.
        Similar to memory card game, the objective is to choose two blocks that match. But instead of card design, you must match their tone.
        The game is extra challenging because all the blocks look exactly the same. Each block is dark gray when unselected. Selected blocks turn light gray.
        Except for tone and position, it’s hard to remember where a block is unless you really pay attention.
        Practice mode will help train your ear to recognize and differentiate tones faster. Choose this mode first before playing Timed and Active Mode.
        There is no shortcut to acing the game. The idea is to train your ear to be receptive to pitch and to remember block positions.
        Musicians or singers may have an advantage in this game. These people tend to have more developed ears for recognizing pitch.
        Once you’ve mastered Practice mode for all four boards, test your skills under Timed mode.
        Timed mode must be completed in a matter of seconds. A larger board provides more time.
        Under timed mode, it’s worth making a wild guess to get the right match. Try to see how many blocks you can match within the time limit.
        Active mode is another challenging option. Here, previously selected blocks may switch randomly anytime within the game.
        If you’re keen on practicing your listening and tone sensitivity, as well as sharpening your memory, you’ll enjoy playing this unique sound matching game.
        Kids and adults can play this game and compare scores. Players can even help each other distinguish pitch if they’re having a hard time.
        But to be fair, try to play the game solo without any help. It’s best to practice your listening and memory skills without help from another player.
